BEIJING -- A round flowerbed standing 15-meter-tall and with a diameter of 50 meters has been built in the Tian'anmen Square as part of the celebrations for the coming 90th founding anniversary of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

The flowerbed, named "Red hearts to the Party," features a 15-meter-tall CPC emblem surrounded at its base by nine red heart-shaped flower sculptures.

"This is the first time to decorate the Tian'anmen Square and Chang'an Avenue with a large flowerbed for the birthday of the party," said Jie Jun, deputy director of the urban greening office of Beijing Municipal Bureau of Landscape and Forestry.

To celebrate the CPC's birthday on July 1, the flowerbed was designed with a steel structure to withstand rain storms and strong winds, Jie said.

"We chose poinsettias, maidenhairs, begonias, morning glories and another 20-odd kinds of flowers," said Xing Yujie, designer of the flowerbed.

Another 1,750 square meters of flowerbeds were also built outside the grassy areas in the east and west of the square, while other flowers decorate Chairman Mao Zedong Memorial Hall, the National Museum of China and the Great Hall of the People.

The flower arrangements were set up at night to avoid inconveniencing tourists.
